Snow School Adventure...before the storm!

This picture shows my feet sticking out of the entrance to the quinzee hut. We made this snow shelter by piling everyone's bags in a circle, covering them with a tarp, and then shoveling snow on top and stomping it smooth. Then we excavated a hole and pulled the bags out. Three people slept inside, but the area where you sleep was so short that I couldn't get a picture of the inside. It was about two and half feet thick and you couldn't hear the condition 1 winds inside.

This is our snow block quarry that we cut with saws. We put about 5 blocks on each sled and then transported them to our camp. Each block weighed about 25 pounds.

This is our restroom! The yellow flag is a "pee flag" and you can see the decorations the men left in the snow. The black building is an outhouse with a long hole in the ground with a seat on top.

This is me on a walk in the evening before the storm hit. You are supposed to go for a hike and get as warm as possible before you turn in for the night. It seemed to work. We also slept with hot water bottles, we had a fleece-lined bag that fit inside our down sleeping bag, and we also put our parka around our bags.

Looks like you guys are having a blast! When will you be back in this area to say, "hi"? We have a yellow "pee flag" in my dorm hall, so people can go in the middle of the hall where the flag is. Here's to staying warm. Keep having a blast and thanks for all the bio knowledge!

Andrea,

You are my hero...I just love reading your stories and seeing your pictures...You and your husband are amazing people...I am envious. You should get a picture of you next to something written in the snow like, "I Love Natalie Lapp" so I can show her. She's doing well and turning things around...she is really growing up...you would be proud. Anyhow...just thought I would let you know that I have been checking in with you and that we miss you...Thom Uhl LHS Fresh. Acad.

Thom,
Great to hear from you! I do love Natalie and am so glad to hear she is happy and prospering! Tell her she has a personal invitation from me to check out this blog.

Mike and I are loving this adventure. He saw his first penguin the other night, an Adelie penguin. The only critter I have seen is a skua bird. It was still exciting to see it because there is no other life other than humans...no bugs either!

I love knowing you are keeping up with us. Keep spreading that upbeat positive energy around. I have always loved that about you.

Keep writing!

Cheers, Andrea
