The penguins are very curious and are not afraid of people. They approached the artist while he was sketching them and when he got up to go get his camera, he took this picture of them peering at his work. He titled this picture, "Everyone is a critic."
This is a picture of the southern lights, or aurora australis. We cannot see these right now because of the 24 hour sunlight. Bummer, eh? However, we really like the 24 sunlight.
I just love this picture of an emperor penguin. These get 4 feet tall! There is a good chance that we will see these later in the summer as the sea ice starts to melt and they can make it into our bay. Right now you can see these at a place called Penguin Ranch where they study how long penguins dive underwater and other behaviors. Only certain people are permitted at this site and it is an hour drive away.

Nichole,
We love the penguins, too! They said there were two adelie penguins yesterday on the ice runway walking around the planes. So, we're hoping that we will have an encounter with them soon. BUT, IT IS COLD!
Penguin Ranch sounds awesome, how do you get to visit there?
Cool aurora australis pictures, will it be dark enough while you are there to see the lights?
That was me, just above. Guess that is the problem with anonymous posting. --Ted

To get to Penguin Ranch you go on a 'Morale Trip' - basically if there are extra spaces on a trip going out there, your department may be able to put someone on the trip. Hopefully we should get some morale while we are down here. I don't think that we will see the aurora, it will still be too light. I would love to see it but it will have to wait.
