Thanksgiving dinner: These are our adventurous friends Austin and Amalia. They have traveled all over the world. Austin is on Mike's cargo team and I work with Amalia. We spend a lot of time with them doing things like playing cards, volleyball, and hiking. Amalia is also going to try to teach us how to cross country ski. Check out that beard and moustache on Mike! It is about 4 weeks old. He and Austin are in the beard growing contest that is judged on Jan 1st.
These are 3 of the girls I work with. Belinda, the blonde in back, is my supervisor and she has worked here for 5 summers and 3 winters. She is very upbeat, patient, and fun to work for. Susie is the girl in red and she lives in Colorado so hopefully we will see her again.
Thanksgiving Celebration:
Thanksgiving has come and gone and we had our first pangs of homesickness. However, for being at the bottom of the world, the celebration here was outstanding. We ate most of the traditional foods and even more...turkey, stuffing, asparagus, shrimp cocktail, homemade breads, salad, cranberry relish, apple & pumpkin & pecan pies, pumpkin cheesecake, chocolate torte. It was a feast to say the least. They even left out leftovers so people could make sandwiches at midnight. Most people dressed up for the occasion which meant wearing your parka over a dress and hose and walking in sensible shoes to the galley and then changing into heels. Mike wore a nice shirt and slacks.
After dinner, we changed into our hiking clothes and went for a 2 1/2 hour hike around the Armitage loop on the ice. After our hike, we went back for a second meal. We are definitely not wasting away here. It's a challenge to not gain weight because the majority of foods served on a daily basis are starches.

I must say Mike's beard and mustache looks good on him. He has grown more in the past few entries. I can't believe you have a bowling alley. And I was worried you wouldn't have anything to do.I would hate to have the pin job though. You both look so happy. I still can't believe you are in Antartica. I miss you both, Love you both- Ashely

My beard is coming in well. I especially like the bald patches on my face. We are doing great - we just went to another pretty interesting lecture that we will write about soon.
Thanks for the birthday wish, you had the day right but were a month early. How nice of you to remember, I am amazed that you did.
More to come later - we love getting comments from everyone - we each check the blog almost more than our email.
Sorry Mike but my husband can grow a beard like that in a couple days! Its the ethnic (italian) genes.
Crabs everywhere here - they have just migrated all 13 million of them! From the jungle to the sea to spawn. in a few weeks we will have baby crabs returning.
I'm very envious of you two - take care and enjoy your adventure. love Ali
