Website for accurate information

We hope that you have enjoyed our ramblings. While we will do our best to give good information, we will probably make mistakes along the way. We will be writing up about daily life here sometime soon.

In the meantime, this is a great website for more information about Antarctica and the stuff that goes on down here. It is the official website. Enjoy!

Dear Julian,
A vessel (huge ship) makes it to McMurdo sound once a year. The ship follows an ice breaker in. That ship is what is responsible for most of our station and South Pole station's supplies. They are also responsible for hauling away all of the human waste that will get processed back in the states. All of the food waste, recyclable material, and construction and nonrecyclable material gets shipped back to the states also.

As for essentials, the "freshies" is what you hear the most excitement about. "Freshies" are fruits and vegetables. Those are flown in every now and then from Christchurch, New Zealand. Personal mail and packages are also not delivered here very often. If you send a letter, it can get here in about 10 days, however, if you send a package here it can take 6 weeks or more.

My job is scheduling all of the flights in and out of Antarctica and it is very difficult because so many flights get canceled or turned around after they start on their way here. It is called "boomeranging" when you get turned around. You may fly 5 hours one way and then have to turn around and fly 5 more hours back because it is too cold or windy to land.
