We arrived and we are cold!

It has been a few days since our last post. We have been here three days but with all day sunlight and work there are some weird time warps and it doesn't feel like three days.

Weather - It's cold. When you go outside and it is windy - those little boogers in your nose freeze almost instantly. Three layers of long underwear plus a heavy parka, wind pants and boots made for this weather will keep you warm sometimes. The first day we had a high of about 3 F with a windchill that took the temp. down to about -50 F. It was very similar today. On the ice runway, where we landed and which will melt in a month or two, it is about 20 degrees colder. Mike had the pleasure of standing out there for an hour or so yesterday.

The flight down was pretty cool - we were in a C-17 - a military cargo plane . There were no windows except on the door, but we were still able to see sea ice for about 45 minutes before we got to the station.

Later we will talk about our spacious dorm room and our work. But tonight we are going to a riveting lecture on foraminiferans - clearly they are one cell protists. We also went to a talk last night about how not to die if we go on a hike or ski trip - there was some useful information at that one.

We are excited, are adjusting and are happy. More to come soon (internet access isn't great but we will post as often as possible).

We have not seen any penguins yet - but we hope to soon. The other day there was a seal on the ice runway which caused a plane to be delayed a bit. But it is still early in the spring and most of the life hasn't shown up yet. Once the ice starts to melt around the station more creatures will be showing up.
