We have today off for Costa Rican Independence day. We had a very nice assembly at school on Friday to celebrate. It was really fun to watch the kids singing the national anthem and some other patriotic songs. They brought out a famous Costa Rican children's author to celebrate her work. It was really cool, the music teacher took a few of her poems and put them to music which the kids then sang for her. I could not see her face but apparently she was very touched. It was also really fun the last few weeks to hear Rebecca singing the national anthem. This more than anything has helped her with Spanish.
The one part of the whole independence day celebration that has made me laugh is that people are celebrating two things...independence day and the Costa Rican team beating the US team last week. One of my senior girls gave a little speech about Costa Rica and its history. A major theme in her speech was about how great it was that the Costa Rica beat the US. Everyone in Costa Rica knows Denver. When we tell someone that we are from Denver, they get this little smile on their face and they know about Denver from the US-Costa Rica soccer game in the snow. Everyone is fairly convinced that the US somehow manufactured the snow to make the game unfair for the Ticos.
Here are some pictures from Independence Day and Rebecca in her traditional dress that the principal bought her. The video is not the national anthem but a song that Bec has been singing around the house and with her music class.
